Manhattan Residence

A Study in Stone and Oak

Toorak, Victoria · Architecture + Interior Design

A Study in Stone and Oak

Manhattan Residence is a considered reworking of an established Toorak apartment, bringing together restored architectural character with a more contemporary interior language.

Stone island and oak cabinetry in Manhattan Residence

The design is organised around a restrained palette of natural stone, warm oak and softly textured finishes. Existing details are retained and refined where they contribute to the character of the apartment, while new interventions are deliberately precise and quietly contemporary.

Rather than treating the interior as a collection of individual rooms, the project establishes a consistent material and spatial language throughout — from the principal living spaces through to joinery, thresholds and smaller moments of detail.

Existing + New

The existing apartment provided a strong architectural framework, but its internal character had become fragmented over time. The design retains and restores selected original elements while introducing a clearer contemporary layer through joinery, material and detail. New interventions are intentionally distinct without competing with the existing fabric, creating a measured relationship between the apartment’s original character and its renewed interior.

Materiality

A deliberately limited palette gives the apartment continuity. Expressive natural stone provides weight and variation, balanced by the warmth and precision of oak joinery and softer plastered surfaces. Materials are allowed to retain their natural movement and character, becoming part of the architecture rather than applied decoration.

Powder Room

Pink Crystallo stone and softly tonal marmorino create a more expressive material moment within the otherwise restrained apartment palette.
